The smoking ban on beaches, bus stops, parks, and public gardens will come into force today in France, the Government announced.

The decree, published in the “Official Gazette,” also prohibits smoking in front of libraries, swimming pools, and schools, and its aim is to protect children from passive smoking.

The decree does not mention electronic cigarettes and cafe terraces are exempt from the ban.

A fine of 135 euros is provided for violating the ban.

“Tobacco must disappear from places where there are children,” said earlier the Minister of Health and Family, Catherine Vautrin, pointing to the right of children to breathe clean air.

It is estimated that around 75.000 people in France die each year from tobacco-related complications.

According to a recent public opinion poll, six out of 10 French citizens (62 percent) support the smoking ban in public places.
