The French government has raised its security threat alert to the highest level following a deadly attack on a concert hall in Russia, which was claimed by ISIL.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced the decision on the “X” network, stating that the authorities take into account the threats to which France is exposed and the fact that the “Islamic State” claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow, AP reported.

The announcement came after French President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency meeting on security issues after an attack in a Moscow suburb on Friday (March 22) that killed 137 people.

France has repeatedly been hit by deadly attacks by the so-called Islamic State, including the 2015 Bataclan massacre in which extremists shot concertgoers and held hostages for hours.

French troops have fought Islamic extremists in the Middle East and Africa.

France was already on high security alert ahead of this year’s Paris Olympics and Paralympics, which are expected to attract millions of visitors from around the world.
