The French parliament has voted no confidence in the government of Prime Minister François Bayrou over his plan to rein in the national debt.
Bayrou (74) took office just nine months ago and will now have to resign.
The government received 194 votes in favor, while 364 voted against it.
The vote deepens France’s political crisis and leaves President Emmanuel Macron tasked with finding a fifth prime minister in less than two years.
Bayrou unexpectedly called for a vote of no confidence in an attempt to win parliamentary support for his strategy to reduce the deficit, which is almost double the EU ceiling.
