The French centrist Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his government have resigned but will temporarily remain in office until a new government is appointed following emergency elections.
The interim government will handle current affairs in the eurozone’s second-largest economy but cannot submit new legislative proposals to parliament or make any major changes, experts said.
Attal and his cabinet will ensure the smooth running of the Olympic Games, which begin on July 26th.
“Handling current affairs means implementing measures that have already been adopted and dealing with emergencies that arise. No more, no less,” said Mathieu Disant, a law professor at Pantheon-Sorbonne University in Paris.
France has previously had interim governments, but none have stayed longer than a few days. There is no set limit on how long an acting prime minister can remain in that position. Parliament cannot force him to resign.
