German Bundestag Member Adis Ahmetović Calls for Increased Troop Deployment in EUFOR Mission

A member of the German Bundestag, Adis Ahmetovic (SPD), addressed the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), caused by the leadership of Republika Srpska (RS) adopting unconstitutional laws banning the operation of state institutions in the territory of this entity.

As he stated in his post, Ahmetovic holds the position that RS President Milorad Dodik “openly threatens the division of the country if the verdict against him becomes final.”

“His deliberate provocations destabilize not only BiH but the entire Western Balkans region. Peace in the Western Balkans is at risk. This is dangerous because attacks on the BiH constitution could lead to the country’s disintegration,” Ahmetovic wrote.

Additionally, he stated that “nationalist rhetoric fuels old conflicts and increases ethnic tensions” and that “international actors like Russia could benefit and support further unrest.”

“The international community must not remain silent. The European Union (EU) and NATO must act immediately before it is too late. A second war on European soil must be prevented. The developments in BiH are alarming and require urgent action to prevent the spread of unrest in the region and thus a new conflict on the European continent,” he wrote.

He also put forward three demands: imposing sanctions on Dodik and his associates, increasing the number of troops in the EUFOR-Althea mission, and diplomatic pressure on Serbia to distance itself from Dodik’s plans, Klix.ba writes.
