German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul began his visit to the Western Balkans with a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The German foreign minister first met with High Representative Christian Schmidt in Sarajevo, and their shared message was that BiH has done a lot on its European path, and that there is more optimism than ever that it will succeed on that path.

They emphasized that it is necessary to complete the reform processes, that is, to adopt the laws necessary for the path to the EU.

“Protecting the basic principles of Dayton, the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole are key. That is why the country’s institutions have our full support. When it comes to the EU path, I will be clear. The conditions from 2022 must be met. First and foremost is the rule of law and strengthening democracy. Germany is ready to support BiH in this regard and process,” Wadephul said.

As he emphasized, the European path depends on the determination of politicians and institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Protecting the fundamental principles of the Dayton Agreement is of paramount importance. Peace and security at the heart of Europe is and will remain our obligation. That is why the institutions of this country that were established in accordance with the Dayton Peace Agreement enjoy our full confidence,” he stressed.

Schmidt highlighted the role of the international community, stressing that the OHR remains committed to its mandate based on the Dayton Agreement and the United Nations.

Schmidt welcomed Minister Wadephul to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country that is 30 years after the war and has survived many catastrophic experiences.

“We are now looking to the future. This is an important visit at a crucial time. After particularly difficult months, there is now reason for greater optimism. There is hope that Bosnian political institutions are now more prepared to face the challenges ahead in a constructive manner. Looking back on the past few months, I am impressed by the resilience of certain state institutions and their ability to face serious constitutional challenges,” said Schmidt.

He praised the important role of the international community in this year, 30 years after the Dayton Peace Agreement ended the suffering of war.

“These observations make me more optimistic about BiH’s progress on the path to EU membership. Much work remains to be done and this remains firmly in the hands of domestic institutions and the domestic political class, and especially the people, in the hands of the voters. The international community stands ready to provide assistance where needed. I am ready to stick to my mandate given to me by the Dayton Peace Agreement, the international community and the United Nations,” said the High Representative in BiH.

He added that the visit of the German Foreign Minister is a strong signal that BiH is not alone.
