Government of the RS gave its Guarantee for Karadzic’s Temporary Stay in the RS?

radovan karadzicThe Government of Republika Srpska gave its guarantee for a temporary stay of The Hague convict Radovan Karadzic on the territory of the RS, at the request of legal counsel Peter Robinson, who asked for the provisional release of Karadzic during the appeal procedure against the indictment of the Trial Chamber of the ICTY in The Hague.

The guarantee of the Government of the RS was published in the Official Gazette of RS No.42, on the 27th of May 2016, and they forwarded it to the Ministry of Justice of BiH for submission to the competent authorities, as announced from the Ministry of Interior of the RS.

Media in the region reported that the court in The Hague rejected the request of former President of the RS, Radovan Karadzic, to get temporary release in order to attend paying tribute to his younger brother.

Theodor Meron, President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, institution established to complete the work of the ICTY, rejected Karadzic’s request for temporary release, noting that conditions for that have not been met, as announced from The Hague.

“The risk of approving provisional release is greater in cases where the first instance verdict was made, in comparison to the period when the trial was still in progress. Karadzic has already been sentenced to 40 years and he still has a long time to serve the sentence if the verdict is confirmed. This situation represents a major incentive for flee,” as stated in Meron’s decision.

He said that “Karadzic expressed his intention to live in the territory of the RS in the request, and that the guarantee that the accused will not escape were sent only from Serbia, and not from the RS and BiH”.
