Bosnia and Herzegovina accedes to the protocol on the elimination of illegal trade in tobacco products

The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina established the proposal of the basis for the accession of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Protocol on the Elimination of Illegal Trade in Tobacco Products, as one of BiH’s priorities on the European path.

The accession of our country to this protocol was proposed by the Ministry of Civil Affairs with the consent of competent institutions of other levels of government, with the aim of contributing to the solution of the global problem – the ever-present illegal trade in tobacco products, which requires a comprehensive international approach and close cooperation in all aspects of illegal trade related to tobacco, tobacco products and equipment for their production.

One of the key goals is the protection of public health in BiH, that is, the suppression of the tobacco epidemic, which represents a global problem with serious consequences for public health and requires effective, comprehensive and coordinated responses at the national and international level.

Also, it is expected that the elimination of illegal trade will have a positive effect on the effectiveness of price and tax measures established to strengthen tobacco control, which will lead to a decrease in the availability of tobacco products.
