Hamas has agreed to the latest proposal by regional mediators for a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage-free deal with Israel, a source in the Palestinian group has told the BBC.

According to a Palestinian official familiar with the talks, the Egyptian and Qatari proposal is a comprehensive two-phase plan, based on a framework proposed by US envoy Steve Witkoff.

The plan calls for Hamas to release around half of the remaining 50 Israeli hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be still alive, in two phases during a temporary 60-day ceasefire. During that period, talks would be held on a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the BBC reports.

Israeli officials have not yet commented on the proposal.

The latest development comes two days after Netanyahu’s office said Israel would “agree to a deal on the condition that all hostages are released at once”.
