At sunset today, Jews all over the world will begin the celebration of Hanukkah, the festival of light, which lasts for eight days. Hanukkah is a celebration of the victory of the Jewish Maccabees over the pagan Hellenistic-Assyrian Army, as well as a dedication to the second temple that was desecrated during the Hellenistic-Assyrian occupation of Jerusalem. This holiday is celebrated in synagogues and homes and is marked with services, the bringing together of families and the lighting of candles on a Menorah.
