Milan Matkovic, as well as some other persons who were arrested by order of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for drug trafficking, and who are currently in custody at the State Prison in Vojkovici, went on a hunger strike.

This information was confirmed by the warden of the state prison, Sinisa Perkovic, who says that Matkovic did it yesterdaymorning.

“The prisoner inflicted bodily injuries on himself by sewing up his own mouth. His injuries have been repaired and are not serious,” Perkovic told.

He added that Matkovic also went on a hunger strike.

As it was learned from sources close to the investigation, the suspect Milan Matkovic and other persons who are suspected in the criminal case pending before the Court of BiH, and who are currently in the detention units of the State Prison for the execution of criminal sanctions in Vojkovici, went on hunger strike yesterday morning because, as they state, violations of their human rights.

The suspects believe that in their case they have no right to an impartial trial and investigation due to constant pressure from both the media and various high officials, including international officials related to BiH.

Journalists contacted the lawyers who are representing them in this criminal case, Lejla Covic and Jasmin Alikadic, who confirmed these allegations.

“We have learned that our defendants went on a hunger strike in the detention unit, as well as that the suspect Milan Matkovicself-harmed. We, as defense attorneys, are unfortunately not surprised by this behavior of our defendants, bearing in mind the continuous pressure on the proceedings in this criminal case, including constant untrue media reports, publication of official documents in the media, direct pressure from international officials on the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH and the Court of BiH, which has an extremely negative connotation in this proceeding. We, as defenders, will do everything to protect their human rights and will use all possible legal remedies, both before domestic and international courts, in order to ensure the fairness of this procedure, which, at the very least, must be treated in accordance with the law and without any pressure from outside the judicial institutions,” it was mentioned in the joint statement of Covic and Alikadic, Klix.ba reports.
