House of Spite in Sarajevo on the List of 10 houses of the World built in Defiance of Others

house-of-spite-inat-kucaHouse of Spite is on the list of 10 houses of the world that have been built in defiance of others. Portal Gazette Review published a list of houses with incredible history, and their mutual connection is spite.

House of Spite, which has been turned into a restaurant, is known around the world. During the Austro-Hungarian period, the authorities wanted to build a City Hall and library in the Old Town. The location for the construction of the City Hall was on the right bank of Miljacka River.

The ruling monarchy wanted to make the building like never before with which they would show their power to citizens of Sarajevo. The construction of the City Hall envisaged the demolition of the surrounding houses with compensation, including the house of the old Benderija, the old citizen of Sarajevo. He did not allowed them to destroy his house for any reason since his house was his peace. After long negotiations, a stubborn old man requested from the Monarchy to pay him a bag of gold coins and to transfer the house to the other side of the Miljacka River brick by brick, stone by stone.

They had no choice but to do what he requested. Since then, Benderija’s house was called “the House of Spite”, after his defiance. The house is still there and defies to all governments and symbolizes Bosnian defiance.

Back in 1997 “the House of Spite” has turned into a traditional Bosnian restaurant.

The winning story belongs to a church monument in England. Joseph Edleston died in 1904 in Gainford where he served in a local church for 41 years. After his death, the family wanted to make a monument in the churchyard, but they were refused. They offered the family another land, but the family refused, and built a house next to the church and the monument that is even higher than the trees in the courtyard of the church.

On the list are houses built in support of the LGBT population, a result of a fight between family members, the process with the city authorities, and the dispute with customers.
