Medjugorje

“Medjugorje, one of the most famous Roman Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world, was visited by about one million tourists from more than a hundred countries from around the world, in the past year,” it was said to agency Fena by Zeljko Vasilj, head of the Tourism Association Office of Medjugorje.

He estimated that 70 percent of that number were, so called. stationed guests, ie guests staying for two, three or more days in Medjugorje, while one-day guests who, especially during the summer months, visited this marian shrine during half-day or daily excursions.

Talking about tourist results in the past year, Vasilj said that 2017 for Medjugorje was an usual year, which did not differ much from the previous ones.

“A new season in Medjugorje begins during the Easter holidays, and we hope that this year we will mark similar results as in the previous ones, “ said Vasilj.

He emphasized that the main touristic season begins on April 1st  and lasts until October 30th , while in between, there is a quieter period.

Most of the guests in Medjugorje come from Italy, but the visitation of Poles has been increasing in the last few years.

If we exclude daily and half-day excursions, the average guests stay in Medjugorje lasts for about 3.5 days, according to the Tourism Association of Medjugorje data.

Medjugorje is one of the most famous Roman Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. It became known through the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, which began in 1981, after which religious tourism began to develop.

Since then, this Herzegovinian place, besides Sarajevo, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
