26 years ago, Princess Diana was killed in a traffic accident in Paris, and the news of her death shocked the world public.
Diana was one of the most famous people at that time, and she still holds the title of the most photographed woman to this day.
The Queen of Hearts, as the British affectionately called her, was a style icon, one of the most influential people of the 20th century, and a great humanitarian.
Her last humanitarian visit took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), just a few weeks before her death, where she spoke with landmine victims.
She visited the Suljkanovic family from the village of Dobrnja near Tuzla. No one told them that a member of the royal family would come. For the first time, the British media The Telegraph showed footage from that period.
Father Muhamed Suljkanovic lost both feet when he stepped on a mine in the forest near his house. Princess Diana promised them financial help so that Muhamed could buy new prosthesis. Although she died, the promise was fulfilled.
After a few months, they received a donation from the royal family and the exact amount that Diana had promised.
“I couldn’t believe that she died. I have a little girl that I named after her because they say if you want to remember someone, you will remember them by that,” Muhamed said.
The princess visited him on his birthday, August 9th.
“Diana and her friend Ken brought a cake and sang ‘Happy Birthday’. We were shocked and wondered how they knew,” said his wife Suada.
The second victim was Malik Brdaric who was 13 years old when he stepped on a mine while playing in the village of Klokotnica in 1996. He lost most of his right leg. Diana visited him too.
“I was expecting a member of the royal family in a shiny dress with a crown on her head. Instead, she came dressed in jeans and a white T-shirt. She was the light at the end of the tunnel. When we heard that she died, that light went out,” Brdaric recalled.
The poignant photos taken in our country have traveled the world and are among the last in which the princess was photographed.
During three days, the princess visited and spoke with victims of mines in Tuzla, Zenica, Gracanica, and Sarajevo, and she wanted to show the world once again how big a problem mines left over from the war are for our country, Klix.ba reports.
