How realistic is it for BiH to get EU candidate Status by 2023?

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will host the leaders of the parliamentary parties from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Sunday, June 12th, in Brussels.

Brussels is preparing a document that will be offered for signing by BiH leaders, which could determine BiH’s further path toward the European Union (EU). Although our country has long ago received 14 priorities that it must meet in order to obtain candidate status, the long-standing political crisis in the country, but also new geopolitical circumstances have given rise to the need for a new approach.

Namely, Brussels is considering a new road map for BiH, which Michel confirmed during his recent visit to our country. One of the topics that will inevitably be on the table in Brussels is the election law, which has not been changed. However, the HDZ is problematizing the manner of filling the House of Peoples of the Federation of BiH (FBiH), and it is certain that it will propose a special regulation to fill that legislative body.

As it was found out, the document being prepared by Brussels has at least 12 points and will define the road map for BiH in order to obtain candidate status. After fulfilling all the requirements, BiH could expect candidate status, perhaps faster than previously estimated, all with the aim of encouraging and giving new impetus to the region. All of this was certainly largely fueled by the war in Ukraine and the spillover of Russian influence into the Balkans, where NATO and the EU want to retain control and which the Western Balkan countries are striving for.

The presidents of the SDA, HDZ, SNSD, DF, SDS, NiP, Nasa stranka, SDP, and HDZ 1990 should travel to Brussels.

The meeting in Brussels will be the first attempt in a long time to concretize expectations from BiH in one place and to find a compromise on a number of issues. So far, numerous criticisms have been heard from our country that the EU expects too much from BiH and that it is time for a change of approach, Klix.ba writes.
