The hydropower plant Una Kostel near Bihac is working on the continuation of phase II of its reconstruction and expansion, which will enable the increase of installed power and further increase the production.
The decision on investment in this project was adopted back in 2014, and its value was estimated at 16.2 million EUR. The project-technical documentation is currently under preparation and the beginning of implementation is planned for the year of 2020.
The start of the exploitation is planned for 2023 when it is expected for the installed power to be increased by about 5 MW with an additional production of about 23 GWh.
“The project of reconstruction and expansion of HPP Una Kostel represents a project on the already existing plant, the reconstruction in riverbed of Una River and the extension through the construction of the so-called Aneks, with the aim of increasing the production efficiency of the plant, the optimal use of Una River and the extension of the working life of the plant. Considering that these works are performed on the already existing plant or in its immediate environment, they will not change the existing state of the environment and the flow of water,” said Samira Talic, expert coordinator for the preparation of the construction of the HPP of PE Elektroprivreda BiH.
HPP Una Kostela was put into operation back in 1954, and its optimum long-term operation was provided through programs of maintenance, revitalization, and reconstruction on several occasions.
Reconstruction of the plant in this HPP started back in 2000 within the first phase, and it included the replacement of the obsolete electrical equipment and certain parts of the plant were reconstructed as well. After the phase I of the reconstruction, the installed flow rate was increased to 88 m³/s, i.e. installed power at 10.14 MW 4 × 2.536 kW.
