Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok signed a decision allowing Sweden to join NATO, his office announced on Tuesday.
On February 26, Hungarian representatives approved the last NATO membership of the Nordic country, which had a policy of military neutrality for decades, reports Hina.
Stockholm abandoned that policy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Hungarians delayed approval of Swedish membership for months, until Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson’s visit last month, during which an arms sale agreement was signed.
The Hungarian parliament sent the decision to the president for his signature last week.
Remaining formalities, such as the storage of accession documents in Washington, are likely to be completed quickly.
