Yemen’s Houthis have carried out dozens of attacks on US naval, coalition and commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19, according to a new report by the US Defense Intelligence Agency.
“The Houthis have carried out dozens of attacks on commercial ships and have defied the United Nations and other international organizations that have called for an end to their maritime aggression,” the DIA said.
The report said container traffic in the Red Sea had fallen by 90 percent since December 2023, with at least 65 countries affected by the attacks.
At least 29 shipping and energy companies changed their routes as a result of the attack.
“Alternative shipping routes around Africa add about 11,000 nautical miles, 1-2 weeks of transit and approximately $1 million in fuel costs for each voyage,” the report added.
The Houthis say they are waging a campaign of solidarity with the Palestinians and against Israel’s continued war in Gaza, Klix.ba writes.
