Iran has announced that it will not participate in direct negotiations with the United States over its nuclear program.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bakei said Tehran had proposed indirect talks to Washington, calling it a generous and responsible offer.

“So far, we have not received a response from the United States about indirect talks,” Bakei said in a statement carried by the state news agency IRNA.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Oman was one of the main options for hosting indirect talks with the United States.

Asked about US threats against Iran, Bakei said his country was ready for any emergency.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has been building its defense capabilities for the past five decades and if the threats materialize, it will face a firm response from Iran,” he said.

US President Donald Trump last month threatened Iran with unprecedented bombing if Tehran refuses to negotiate with Washington over its nuclear program.

“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. There will be bombing like never before,” Trump said.

Iran has responded that it will have no choice but to acquire nuclear weapons if attacked by the US or its allies.
