On Wednesday, Israel warned that any European Union (EU) sanctions against the country would receive an “appropriate response,” after the European Commission proposed suspending trade privileges with Israel and sanctioning two far-right Israeli ministers.

“The recommendations of the European Commission (…) are moral and political perversions, and we hope they will not be adopted,” wrote Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on X.

“Any action against Israel will receive an appropriate response, and we hope that does not happen,” he added.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Commission “proposes the suspension of trade privileges with Israel, the sanctioning of extremist ministers and violent settlers, and the suspension of bilateral support to Israel, except for support for Israeli civil society and Yad Vashem.”

Sanctions were also proposed for ten members of Hamas leadership.
