Sanchez previously said that Spain will adopt the official recognition of the state of Palestine today at a ministerial meeting, adding that it is “a historic decision that has one goal, which is to contribute to the Israelis and Palestinians achieving peace.”
He said that it is not up to Spain to determine the borders of other countries, but that Madrid’s mission is “fully aligned” with United Nations Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 as well as the position traditionally held by the European Union.
“Therefore, we will not recognize the changes to the border lines from 1967 that were not agreed between the parties,” he stressed.
He said that the recognition of Palestine is not adopted against anyone, “especially not against Israel, a friendly nation that we respect and with whom we want to have the best possible relationship.”
He repeated that Spain condemned the “terrorist attack” by Hamas in October.
