Kuwait’s crown prince, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was named the new emir after the death of his predecessor Sheikh Nawaf, state television reported.

“Kuwait’s cabinet names crown prince, his highness Sheikh Meshal… emir of the state of Kuwait,” the broadcaster said.

A father of 12, Sheikh Meshal becomes Kuwait’s 17th ruler, and will have a year to name a new crown prince.

He was deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard from 2004 to 2020, and was named crown prince when Sheikh Nawaf took power.

Seikh Nawaf, who ascended to the throne in 2020 after the death of his half-brother, died on Saturday at the age of 86.

He was admitted to the hospital in late November “due to an emergency health problem,” according to the official KUNA news agency, which did not elaborate on his illness.
