Legend about Girl’s Turbe in Tuzla

Gornja Tuzla, according to available historical data, is older than Donja Tuzla, and although today, administratively speaking, it is a local community, it is certainly a settlement that can be proud of its rich history and tradition.

At the entrance to Gornja Tuzla from the direction of Tuzla, occasional travelers will be greeted by the Girl’s Turbe, the existence of which there are no reliable written traces. According to residents, the legend has been passed down from generation to generation, and it is mostly about a murdered girl who washed clothes on the river Jali and because of which a turbe was built.

Legend says that military units from Hungary once invaded the northern part of Upper Tuzla and spotted a girl on the river bank. Since they wanted to invade Gornja Tuzla unnoticed, they set out to kill her. They succeeded in their criminal expedition, and the body of the dead girl Jala was taken to the place where the turbe was built, which was called the Girl’s Turbe.

Near the place where the Maiden’s Turbe was built, there used to be a musala – a mosque where the people of Gornja Tuzla used to pray.

The turbe has undergone several restorations and reconstructions in the past. With them, there was probably a trace of some time, maybe a note about the builder of the turbe and the year of its erection.

There are five mosques in Gornja Tuzla today: Hadzi Iskenderova (Carsija mosque), Hadzi Bajazidova (Potocka mosque), Hadži Huseinova (Potrmahalska mosque), Zagradačcka mosque and Bali-beg mosque (Bijela mosque). There are as many as 23 cemeteries in this area.
