Dusko Suvara surrendered to SIPA, he is going to Prison immediately

Duško Suvara, who was sentenced to six years in prison for rape and inhuman treatment in 1992 in the area of Glamoč, surrendered this morning to the premises of the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) in Banja Luka, where he will be sent to serve his prison sentence, it was confirmed for Detektor.

His defense attorney Slobodan Perić says that Suvara was supposed to report to serve his sentence on December 27 last year. After he did not do that, the State Court issued an international warrant for him in March of this year, recalls Perić, who then told Detektor that Suvara contacted him from Turkey.

“He was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison and had to be sentenced to a single prison sentence. He has already served this sentence. That was the reason why he hid, that is, he didn’t want to go to serve his sentence for seven months, hoping that the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, that is, the Supreme Court of Republika Srpska, would decide on his appeal, that is, his request,” states Perić.

Suvara, by the judgment of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina dated May 27 last year, was found guilty of raping two Bosniak women in the area of Glamoč in May and June 1992 as a member of the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS). This verdict was confirmed by the Appellate Department of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, after rejecting as unfounded the appeals of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the defendant’s defense attorney against the first-instance verdict.

“He will now be sent to serve his sentence in the state prison in East Sarajevo. We are now waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on his appeal, and at the same time we asked for a repeat of the proceedings before the Supreme Court of Republika Srpska, which sentenced him to 20 years. It has been the practice since 1945 to impose a single prison sentence,” says Perić, who accuses the “Court [of] deliberately breaking the law”.

SIPA confirmed for Detektor that Suvara has reported to serve his sentence and that he will be transferred to the state prison.
