Sasa Magazinovic, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PABiH), said yesterday that one of the ways to protect BiH in the new geopolitical situation is to get candidate status for membership in the European Union (EU), which is a political decision of European institutions.
He reminded that at different time intervals, European structures made different decisions for countries that more or less fulfilled their obligations, and recalled the way in which Bulgaria and Romania became members of the EU and the circumstances that preceded it.
”Unfortunately, such things are happening today that open the possibility that, as one of the tools for responding to security challenges, the path of certain countries to the EU and NATO will be accelerated,” Magazinovic stated.
He said that the SDP would continue to use membership in the Party of European Socialists and that it was important for BiH because three deputies from that group were the authors of amendments that led to the European Parliament’s position that BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik and his associates should be sanctioned.
Magazinovic explained that the candidate status, and even the membership in the EU, is a political decision and, looking experientially for other countries, one rule was valid for some, another for others, but in the end, everything ended in a political decision.
”This means that, if there is a political decision, next morning BiH can get candidate status with membership, conditionally. We got the conditions for the entry into force of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), which BiH did not fulfill. After the failure of that process was declared, we got the SAA because it is a political decision,” he added.
As Magazinovic concluded, the likelihood that BiH would be granted candidate status depends on the extent of political readiness and assessment within European structures.
