This year, a total of 306 human remains were exhumed, which represents a significant result, as stated by spokeswoman for the Missing Persons Institute (MPI) of BiH, Lejla Cengic. She also noted that this is two times bigger result in comparison to the last year when a total of 141 remains were exhumed.

“The thing that marked the year of 2017 when it comes to the process of searching for missing persons is the discovery of five mass graves. The largest one of them was the mass grave Koricanske stijene, from which were exhumed 137 mortal remains. Among these mortal remains were 86 sculls, so we expect at least 86 identities,” stated Cengic.

In the area of Vlasenica were discovered three mass graves. In the village of Tugovo was found primary mass grave from which were exhumed 11 victims, and the remains of two women were exhumed among these remains.

In the area of Vlasenica, at the locality Jelovacka cesma, were found another two mass graves. A total of 20 victims were exhumed from one, while 8 incomplete mortal remains were exhumed from the other one.

The fifth mass grave was found in the village Miljevina, in the area of Foca, and five victims were exhumed from that mass grave. It is assumed that these were Bosniak civilians who were killed during the war.

When it comes to identification, a total of 179 victims were identified this year. These are mainly victims who were exhumed in the previous years, and this year was determined their identity based on the DNA analysis. Their identity was also confirmed by their family members.

When it comes to the central recording of missing persons, Cengic stated that the process of verifying all missing persons is taking place and 23,776 missing persons have been verified so far.
