Located in the far west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the confluence of the Unac and Una rivers within Una National Park, Martin Brod has recently seen a growing number of visitors. Along the road toward the railway bridge of the Una railway, near the border with Croatia, an increasing number of cyclists, hikers, and campers from various European countries have been recorded. This shows that interest in the area is increasing despite infrastructure limitations.
A married couple from Slovenia, visiting this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time, said a friend recommended the destination.
“We are delighted by the natural beauty and the river. We ride bicycles through the park, and every part of the route looks like a postcard. We came here to enjoy the peace, and we will undoubtedly return,” they said.
Tourists who arrived by camper van and stayed in Kulen Vakuf shared similar impressions.
“We have been visiting this place for a couple of years. We like the combination of nature, affordable prices, and the hospitality of the people. You have everything, from camps to restaurants and rest areas. We plan to stay here until May 1 and spend the holiday by the Una River,” they said.
The Martin Brod area is famous for its waterfalls, tufa barriers, and the confluence of the Unac and Una rivers, making it one of the most attractive sites in the National Park. The fishing ban further contributes to the preservation of the natural balance, while the crystal-clear water and abundant flora and fauna are among the key values of this destination.
The area’s tourism is centered on active holidays, including cycling, hiking, and camping, as well as adrenaline activities such as rafting and kayaking. Local settlements offer authentic stays in nature and continue to develop a diverse hospitality sector.
In addition to its natural beauty, the area bears visible traces of the past. Near the railway bridge stands an improvised wooden bridge, built on the remains of the former road crossing destroyed during the war. Although still used by locals and visitors, its condition indicates a need for significant infrastructure investment.
The road connecting Martin Brod with Bihać is almost entirely paved, with only a short section of about one hundred meters left to be completed. The project is financed by the Federal Government and JP Ceste FBiH (Roads of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina).
The road from Martin Brod to the wider area via Drvar has not yet been reconstructed. However, it is in good condition and is popular among tourists visiting the viewpoint above Martin Brod. It also serves as a gateway for further exploration of the tourist potential in the Una Sana and Canton 10 (Livno) regions.
The increasing number of visitors from the region and across Europe confirms that Una National Park has strong potential for sustainable tourism development, rooted in nature conservation and the authentic experiences the region offers.
