During the last few months, members of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina discovered more than 9,000 people illegally crossing and attempting to illegally cross the state border, which is almost 30 percent more than in the same period last year.

According to citizenship, the most persons caught illegally crossing or attempting to illegally cross the state border are citizens of Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan, Morocco, Syria, Iraq, and Bangladesh.

The Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina stated that the largest number of illegal migrants were detected outside the border crossings, i.e. in the border zone, and since the very beginning of the migrant crisis, the most illegal attempts to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina have been in the area of responsibility of the East – Višegrad Field Office in the area covered by border police units Zvornik, Višegrad and Hum – Foča.

Specialized units of the Border Police were redeployed to the aforementioned units in order to carry out activities with the aim of preventing illegal crossings of the state border, cutting migrant routes and detecting and prosecuting persons engaged in migrant smuggling.

“Members of the Border Police of BiH undertake complex measures and actions with the application of all available material and technical means in the protection of the state border and, with reinforcement from other GP units and the redistribution of police officers to the parts of the border where there is the greatest migration pressure, in the area of responsibility of TU Istok – Višegrad members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Srpska, the Directorate for the Coordination of Police Bodies and the State Agency for Investigation and Protection also provide assistance to members of the GP,” they stated.

They added that the BiH Border Police, despite its limited personnel capacity, continuously monitors the state of illegal migration at the state border and makes maximum efforts, in accordance with the law, with the aim of effectively protecting the state border and suppressing illegal migration.
