Members of the “Green Berets” Association, fighters of the Republic of BiH Army and citizens of Sarajevo marked on Friday the anniversary of one of the decisive events in the defense of the capital and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Hamdija Kreševljakovića Street, the former Dobrovoljačka Street.

The president of the Association “Green Berets” Stari Grad Vahid Alić said that they gathered to pay tribute to the fighters who gave their lives for the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We mark the second and third of May as the most significant date from the period of aggression in Bosnia and Herzegovina. On this day, Sarajevo, BiH was defended, as well as the President of the RBiH, Alija Izetbegović,” said Alić.

He reminded that the JNA column was a legitimate target, after the day before it attacked the Presidency and attempted a coup d’état, and arrested President Alija Izetbegović and members of his delegation at the airport.

“At the end of 1991 and the beginning of 1992, the JNA moved complete heavy weapons to the slopes of Sarajevo under the pretext that they were digging them in with the intention of being able to defend Sarajevo. It is that solid ring that was made by the JNA and handed over to the paramilitary formations,” said Alić.

He pointed out that the siege of the city, which lasted the longest in the history of modern warfare, began on May 3, and that they have special emotions towards this date, Federalna writes.
