Josip Broz Tito and Fidel Castro met in September 1969 in the hall of the Palace of the United Nations.
Castro, a former president and leader of the Cuban Revolution who died early this morning, before Tito’s speech approached Josip Broz to meet the leader that he extremely appreciated back then.
After that, the two officials were hanging out quite often. Castro came to Brioni, Tito traveled to Cuba.
Although they had different views in politics, these differences have never caused a conflict. On the contrary, the two leaders maintained their close political and personal relations even in September 1979 when they had a great battle in defense of “the original principles of non-alignment” on the Non-Aligned Summit in Havana.
There are those who also believe that Tito and Castro, politicians with similar experience and personally very close, just played the show on Cuba, which brought support of Washington to Yugoslavia and support of Moscow to Cuba. But Fidel Castro was one of the very few statesmen who did not attend Tito’s funeral…
