The shot putter Mesud Pezer from Bosnia and Herzegovina won 9th place tonight in the final of the 26th European Championship in Rome (Italy), while the new champion is the Italian Leonardo Fabri.
After winning the 11th place in the competition last night with a length of 19.79 meters in the competition of 29 throwers, Pezer threw 19.92 meters tonight in the third series (he threw 19.70 m in the 1st series and 19.60 m in the 2nd series), which is his at that moment it was 8th place, but Bob Bertemes from Luxembourg, with a shot of 20.86 meters, managed to break into the top eight.
With that, the BiH competitor also fell to ninth position, so he did not get the chance to throw three more times and to continue the fight for a medal or, possibly, to improve his ranking. Portugal’s Francisco Belo with 19.74, Italian Zane Weir with 19.70 and Swede Wictor Petersson with 19.45 meters were weaker than the BiH representative tonight.
The new European champion, the Italian Leonardo Fabri, who also won in the qualifiers last night and was the only competitor who met the standard for the final, already threw 22.12 meters in the second series and overtook the Croatian Filip Mihaljević, who had thrown 21.10 meters in the first series.
In the fifth, Fabri achieved a length of 22.45 meters, which definitely removed Mihaljević from the European throne, who won two years ago in Munich and became European champion with a shot of 21.88 meters. In the sixth series, Mihaljević improved the length to 21.20 meters, while Fabri ended the competition with a shot of 21.93 meters, confirming his dominance once again.
Thus, Fabri had three shots longer than the second-placed Mihaljević, but he also broke the record of the European championships, which was held by the German Werner Günthör. In 1986 in Stuttgart, he achieved a length of 22.22 meters.
Polish Michal Haratyk won the bronze medal tonight with a length of 20.94 meters, which is his longest shot this season. The silver medalist from Munich, Serbian Armin Sinančević, this time did not even manage to qualify for the finals, because he failed three times in the qualifications last night and was left without a place, while the bronze medalist from two years ago, Czech Tomaš, finished fifth tonight. with a length of 20.88 meters.
Yesterday, with a time of 1:49.20, middle distance athlete Abedin Mujezinović was seventh in his 800 meter qualifying race in the semi-finals, and he finished second to last, in 31st place overall, and did not participate in tonight’s semi-finals.
