Tensions already exist in the Western Balkans countries and “I do not want the military conflict to happen,” said Merkel last night at the meeting of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Darmstadt on the west of the country.
Many experts warned that in case that Germany, as the major destination for refugees that are mostly running away from the war in Syria, closes the border with Austria, the Balkan countries through which the biggest number of migrants and refugees passes by might do the same, as reported by German media.
In late October, the EU announced that 100,000 acceptance centers will be established in Greece and the Balkans in order to control the largest migrant crisis so far, and over the past few months, already certain tension arose between Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Hungary in the attempt to solve the migrant crisis.
Merkel said that she does not want to be negative, but she warned that the situation could get worse soon.
She warned on possible military conflicts on the Balkans if Germany closes its border to Austria for refugees, reported Bild.
The issue of refugees also made divisions in Germany, in the ruling coalition of conservatives and social democrats, who failed to reach an agreement at the meeting on Sunday, since the conservatives from the Bavarian CSU demanded that Germany accepts less than the expected 800,000 refugees in 2015.
They announced the new round of negotiations on Thursday, and one of the main topics is the establishment of so-called transit zone on the German-Austrian border in order to accelerate consideration of the requests and deportation. Conservatives are in favor of it, but the social democratic SPD are rejecting the idea.
