Three educational unions reported that according to data that is not yet final, about 37 thousand employees in more than 1000 educational and scientific institutions in Croatia participated in the warning strike held on Wednesday.

A one-day warning strike in primary and secondary schools and at faculties and institutes was organized on Wednesday by the Preporod School Union, the Independent Union of Croatian Secondary School Employees (NSZSŠH) and the Independent Union of Science and Higher Education.

Among other things, they are looking for an increase in the base and coefficients, as well as protection and appropriate social status.

The total number of registered employees on strike in the entire education vertical, according to the data so far, is 37,079, claim the three unions, referring to the data collected and submitted by the union commissioners.

According to them, the strike was carried out in 363 out of 416 elementary schools where Preporod has a branch and 140 elementary schools where there is no Preporod branch.

There were also strikes in 130 secondary schools out of 136 in which Preporod operates, and 331 secondary schools out of 348 in which NSZSŠH has a branch.

Out of 130 institutions in higher education and science in which the Independent Union of Science and Higher Education is present, the strike was carried out in 110 institutions.

The Preporod union recorded 15,794 employees on strike in primary and secondary schools, of which 10,627 are members of Preporod, whose members on strike make up almost 82 percent of the total membership of that union. The remaining 5,167 employees are non-members or members of the SHU who voluntarily joined the strike.

According to data provided by the Independent Union of Secondary School Employees, the number of employees on strike is 12,663, of which 8,493 are members of NSZSŠH, which represents about 90 percent of the membership.

8,622 employees participated in the strike in higher education and science, which represents about 30 percent more employees than the Science Union has registered members at those institutions, the unions state.

The final data on the response to the strike, they announced, will be announced at tomorrow’s press conference.
