More than half a million Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv, calling for the immediate release of the hostages who have been held captive in the Gaza Strip for 11 months and for early elections in Israel, a TASS correspondent reported.
According to the organizers of the meeting, similar protests, in which tens of thousands of Israelis participated, were held in Jerusalem, Haifa, Kfar Sava, Beersheba, Netanya, Rehovot and Rishon Lezion.
The organizers said that the rally in Tel Aviv last night brought together the largest number of demonstrators so far.
At the end of the rally in Tel Aviv, hundreds of demonstrators refused to disperse, but some of them began to block the highway “Ajalon” in the eastern part of the city.
The police said the gathering was illegal and detained several protesters.
Some demonstrators called for the immediate resignation of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, as well as for early elections in Israel as soon as possible.
According to Israeli authorities, Hamas is currently holding 62 hostages and 39 bodies of former hostages.
