nejra (1)Sarajevo-born Nejra Kalkan was officially proposed as a candidate in Amsterdam for member of the European Parliament on behalf of the Labor Party in the Netherlands. She is thus the first Bosnian woman from the Netherlands who is on the list of candidates to become a member of the European Parliament.

Kalkan, whose family escaped the war in B&H and settled in the Netherlands, graduated from the University in Amsterdam in the area of international and European law.

After her studies, she worked (volunteered) in the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the US Congress in Washington.

During the last four year, she has been working as Senior Advisor in the European Parliament as an expert for justice, internal affairs and civil rights in Europe. She is also an advisor to the member of the European Parliament Emina Bozkurt on issues relating to B&H and the rights of women in the Western Balkans.

‘’Europe has been in an economic crisis for a long time. Therefore, the social democratic voice at this moment is extremely important for a strong and social Europe, whose focus is on the promotion of employment, and personal and collective prosperity. I wish to use my expertise and experience in the fight for economic stability in Europe, and in so doing to not lose from our sight the rights of citizens. In my work, I will try to continue to help B&H on its path towards European integration’’, she said.
