For the first time, New York has introduced a congestion fee due to traffic jams. According to United States (U.S.) media, car drivers will pay up to nine dollars per day to enter certain locations during peak hours, and 2.25 dollars during other hours.
Trucks and buses will pay up to 21.60 dollars in fees.
The congestion zone covers the area south of Central Park, including well-known landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the financial district around Wall Street.
This measure was introduced to prevent severe traffic jams and improve the public transportation system.
The fee is planned to increase to 12 dollars by 2028 and 15 dollars by 2031.
This proposal was presented two years ago by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he opposes such practices.
