The ninth Vukovar-Srebrenica ultramarathon started on Monday morning from the Ovcara Memorial Center with the aim of paying tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
The leader of the “Vukovar – Srebrenica” project, Ekrem Becirovic, says that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ultramarathoners will run only the first stage from Ovcara to Vinkovci in the length of about 31 kilometers.
“Unfortunately, we are not going to Srebrenica due to the current epidemiological situation, but in this way we want to mark the 25th anniversary of the genocide and send a message that we will never forget Srebrenica,” Becirovic said in a statement to Fena news agency.
Permanent marathoners Robert Lasumovic, Drazen Cucic, Elvir Rakipovic and Dusko Strbac are participating in the ultramarathon, and there are a total of 12 runners who will run.
The organization of the Vukovar-Srebrenica ultramarathon is intended to pay tribute to the victims of the crimes in Srebrenica and Vukovar and to all the innocent victims during the war in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1990 to 1995.
