On This Day Eugene of Savoy burned Sarajevo

He headed from Osijek with a total of 6,500 warriors and crossed Sava River at Brod, starting short invasion on Bosnia. In eleven days, he managed to come in Sarajevo, he conquered it, robbed and burnt it and returned back to Osijek.

Eugene of Savoy, the Prince, Austrian general and statesman. He was considered as the greatest military leader of his time.

On the 6th of October 1697 with a total of 6,500 warriors (4,000 lancers, 2,500 infantrymen with guns and 12 small cannons) he departure from Osijek and crossed Sava River at Brod, starting the short invasion on Bosnia.

In eleven days, he came in Sarajevo, conquered it, robbed and burnt it and returned back to Osijek. Around 40,000 Catholics left Bosnia with him. They settled in the devastated Slavonia after the banishment of the Turks. After this exodus, Catholics have become the smallest religious group in Bosnia, while on the second place, behind the Muslims, came Orthodox Christians.
