The Hungarian Parliament is expected to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO by the end of the month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.
“The good news is that our dispute with Sweden will soon be resolved. We are moving towards ratifying Sweden’s accession to NATO at the beginning of the spring session of the parliament,” Orban said.
He noted that steps have been taken with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to “rebuild trust” between the two countries.
Sweden applied for NATO membership in May 2022 in a historic policy shift prompted by the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Hungary is the only NATO country that has not yet ratified Sweden’s request, a process that requires the support of all Alliance members.
The Hungarian parliament is expected to convene on February 26th.
