Prisoners from Rijeka dug a Tunnel to escape from the Prison during the Masquerade

A potential escape from the Prison in Rijeka was prevented by the timely reaction of security officers, whereby, apart from material damage to the wall, no other damage was recorded, the Ministry of Justice and Administration announced, following numerous media inquiries.

The first information was about a group of eight or nine prisoners, but the Ministry denied this.

The incident situation of digging the outside of the wall of the prisoner’s room was recorded on Sunday, and two persons deprived of liberty participated in the event, therefore, the ministry says, the information about the group of eight to ten prisoners is incorrect.

All the circumstances of the event are still being determined, and the competent services of the prison system will take measures within their scope with the aim of minimizing the damage caused, sanctioning the involved persons deprived of their liberty and raising the level of security in that penal body, the ministry says.

As the prison in Rijeka is located in the center of the city, if the prisoners had managed to escape, they would have had numerous escape options.
