The former president of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, confirmed today that he is interested in the post of EU special envoy for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, in which he would succeed Miroslav Lajčak, whose mandate expires in August.

Previously, the Prime Minister of Slovenia Robert Golob stated that he unconditionally supports Pahor in his candidacy for the position of EU Special Representative for Dialogue and added that for this reason, in the past month, he held numerous talks with the leaders of European countries, as well as with the highest representatives of the EU.

The special envoy, who, in addition to the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, also deals with other regional issues in the Western Balkans, is proposed by the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, and the final decision is made by the Council of the EU or the member states.

Pahor is known for advocating for the EU to expand to the Western Balkans, but also for the fact that he insisted on fulfilling the Brussels agreements and forming the Community of Serbian Municipalities.

He was the president of Slovenia from 2012 to 2022, and recently founded the Institute of Friends of the Western Balkans, whose goal is to promote dialogue, reconciliation, peaceful resolution of open issues, economic development and integration of the countries of the region into the EU.
