Performance Art at Sarajevo Protests

PROTESTI U SARAJEVU:DEMONSTRATI BLOKIRALI RASKRSNICU KOD HIGIJENSKOG ZAVODAA few days ago, Thomas Steyaert, an artist from Belgium who currently lives in Sarajevo, began to stage performance art at the protests in Sarajevo.

There will be another performance art today at around 12:30, and Thomas is now looking for people to join as participants, performers or to provide ideas for performance art at the protests in Sarajevo.

‘’The series of performances are not an attack on individuals but an attack on the political system, corruption, the lack of employment, privatization, the overall social situation and the lack of support for the arts. If corruption becomes a habit, unemployment common, the social situation unbalanced and artists ignored, then it’s just a matter of time for the people to stand up. I speak of an attacks because many of the performative actions or happenings have a violent character towards the body of the performer. It represents a feeling of empathy towards the people who suffer and struggle. The long duration and repetition represents the slowness of positive progress (the future of B&H is not ZARA!), the difficulty of communication on the political level and much more…’’, said Thomas.

He adds that ‘’The series of performances is representing the necessity of change’’.

Performance art has become ubiquitous at protests throughout the world, where the body is used to express an oppositional political stance.
