Plane using new navigation satellite system lands at Sarajevo Int’l Airport

A new navigation satellite system providing safer and more economical landing was presented on Friday afternoon at Sarajevo International Airport (SIA).

After FlyDubai airplane safely landed at SIA, Transport Director Nermin Zijadic said that the new system, using a global satellite navigation system, will improve security and increase capacity.

“A better vertical and horizontal guidance will be achieved, and thus, the likelihood of possible accidents will be reduced,” Zijadic explained.

Additionally, the introduction of Performance-Based Navigation will result in an increase of capacity because the new way of flying will allow a narrower trajectory, and airport administration will increase the number of flights.

“Delays and fuel consumption will be reduced and noise at all stages, both in approach and in departure, will be decreased,” Zijadic said, adding that not only SIA will have benefits from new system but also other airports in the country.

Earlier, SIA used conventional procedures that use signals made by earth radio navigation devices, according to chief of security at Agency for the Provision of Air Navigation Services (BHANSA) Vlado Juric.

“This procedure will enable the aircraft to land in the event of a malfunction of our radio navigation devices and will thus directly contribute to the continuity of operations at SIA,” Juric explained.

The introduction of the procedure is the result of three-year-long joint work of the air traffic service provider NATS from Britain, BHANSA, SIA, BiH Civil Aviation Administration and FlyDubai, Xinhua reports.
