Poland and Allies Scramble Jets Following Russian Strikes on Ukraine

Polish and allied jets were scrambled on Sunday morning – for the second time in a week – in what the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces called a precautionary measure after Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, near the Polish border.

“Polish and allied jets are operating in our airspace, while ground air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest level of readiness,” the command said on the social platform X, headquartered in the United States (U.S.).

While U.S. and European Union (EU) attempts to end the bloodshed in Ukraine stagnate, Russia appears to have escalated its attacks on Ukraine. Eight people were injured in the night attack, Ukrainian officials said.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the attack on Kyiv, calling it “a sign that further hesitation and attempts to appease (Russian President) Vladimir Putin are futile.”

He called on “U.S. and European nations to force Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire.”

Tusk last week promised to deal with drones entering Polish territory. A drone wreck was found on Saturday in Lublin, in eastern Poland, after it crashed a few hundred meters from the village of Majdan-Sielec.

The drone will be handed over to forensic experts for examination next week, Polish media reported. “On-site inspection confirmed that the drone was not equipped with a combat warhead,” said Rafal Kawalec, spokesman for the Zamosc Prosecutor‘s Office.
