Police Clash with Protesters at Blocked Faculty in Novi Sad

Members of the intervention police and strong forces of the gendarmerie intervened yesterday to remove students and citizens gathered in front of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education in Novi Sad, during which several people were injured, including journalists.

The police action followed after the dean of the Faculty, Patrik Drid, reported that he was prevented from entering his workplace in the morning and requested police assistance to be allowed access to the building.

The first clashes between the police, students, and citizens broke out shortly after, and after the arrival of additional police and gendarmerie forces, an intervention began during which shields, batons, and tear gas were used.

Emergency services provided assistance to a larger number of people who suffered injuries to their arms, legs, and heads, as well as to those who complained about the effects of exposure to tear gas.

Dean Drid was present during the clashes and was brought into the building after police forces broke through the blockade.

Shortly thereafter, he was again taken out of the building while those gathered poured water on him and threw eggs at him.

The gathered citizens and students also poured water on the police officers and threw eggs at them.

The Faculty of Sport and Physical Education has been under blockade for several months already, as have other faculties of the University of Novi Sad.

The faculty administration recently announced that the “blockade has ended” and that, allegedly, the majority of students decided to continue classes online, AA writes.
