The prices of basic foodstuffs have reached astronomical heights. The average price of 250 grams of butter currently exceeds 8 BAM, while a liter of milk costs 2.60 BAM. It is quite clear that there are fewer and fewer people who can afford basic foodstuffs, so there are more and more people who turn to theft in desperation.

Security tags are being set up

So, in order to prevent theft, the management of certain storesdecided that, in addition to expensive cosmetics and alcoholic beverages, they put security tags on other items as well.

In July, security tags were placed on the butter, which means that this food became a luxury for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) even then.

Managers of larger shopping centers in BiH explained that they do not want to disclose information regarding the theft of food items to the public, because in most cases the products are returned with the quick intervention of security guards and there is no need for police intervention.

The reporter team visited a supermarket in Sarajevo settlement – Velesici.

Rising prices

Worker Sadika Musanovic told that thefts have become more frequent recently, especially due to rising prices.

”So far, we have recorded through the cameras that individuals mostly steal Eurocreams, stews, soups, fruit from shop windows, and there are also minors who use the situation with the codes on “Coca-Cola” bottles because when you scan the code, then the bottle is no longer valid, in some way. There were also individuals who opened chips, ate a little, and put them back on the shelf,” noted Musanovic.

All cases from ”Penny” market are reported

Also, the situation in the “Penny” market is not good either, products are stolen, but mostly the security guards or even the police react, according to deputy head Nejra Bajramovic.

”Every person who steals something must know in some way that he/she will bear the consequences. You can see everything through the cameras, and there are also security guards doing their job. We don’t know what kind of punishment they will be given, that is not within our competence, we just report the theft,” mentioned Bajramovic, Avaz reports.
