Portugal said on Saturday that it has decided to provide additional support to the UN-controlled Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) with an aid package worth 1 million euros ($1.08m).

The Middle East Eye said in a Sunday report that Portugal’s decision had been announced in a post on the X by  Portuguese Foreign Minister Joao Cravinho.

Cravinho said the decision had been adopted after “a dialogue with” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is desperate, and it is essential that we do not turn our backs on the Palestinian population at this difficult time,” the minister said.

Portugal’s acting government said on Friday that it will continue to fund UNRWA despite Israel’s accusations of terrorism against some of its employees, IRNA news agency writes.
