Based on the measurement of concentrations of pollutants in the air on Saturday and yesterday, as well as the weather forecast for the next three days, the Expert Body for Coordination and Supervision of the Implementation of the Plan of Intervention Measures in Cases of Excessive Air Pollution in Canton Sarajevo (CS) concluded that the conditions for declaring a”Preparedness” episode in CS area have been met.
At the measuring stations located in the localities of Vijecnica, Vogosca, Ilijas, Otoka, Hadzici, and Ilidza, the limit value for PM10 (50µg/m3) was exceeded.
In the “Preparedness” episode, the following actions are taken:
In zone A, in the municipalities of Stari Grad, Centar, Novi Grad, Novo Sarajevo and Ilidza, below 700 meters above sea level, the movement of cars and trucks, whose diesel engines have the EURO1 norm and below, is prohibited, with increased controls by inspection authorities and the assistance of the Ministry of Interior;
In all zones, the intensification of road cleaning and washing with the application of a wet procedure with calcium chloride;
Strengthening inspection supervision over construction sites;
The population is urged to reduce the number of vehicles in traffic by using one vehicle for several people;
The population is urged not to further contribute to air pollution with their behavior and activities, and it should be reminded that it is punishable to dispose hot ashes in municipal waste containers, as well as that it is forbidden to burn waste and other non-vegetative material in open space;
During the duration of this episode of air pollution, the CS Institute of Public Health recommends to risk groups of the population – pregnant women, children, the elderly, and chronic patients with lung and cardiovascular diseases to reduce movement and staying outside, and if necessary, to use face masks against air pollution.
