jasmilaDirector from B&H Jasmila Žbanić is this year’s winner of one of the most prestigious European cultural awards Kairos 2014 for her artistic achievements and activism regarding the victims of war in the Balkans.

Žbanić appeared on the European art scene with her debut film ‘Grbavica’ in 2006, which is about a victim of rape in a camp during the war in B&H. She won the ‘Golden Lion’ for best film at the Berlin Film Festival for ‘Grbavica’.

‘’By giving her this award, the jury wishes to underline the importance of her work and draw public attention to the region, whose conflicts are often forgotten in the midst of the current European crisis’’, said in a statement by the jury.

The prize is worth 75.000 Euros, which will be given to the director in the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg Theatre by Director of Berlinale Dieter Kosslick.

Since 2007, the Kairos award is provided by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation F.V.S. from Hamburg to European artists who work in the fields of visual and performing arts, music, architecture, design, film, photography, literature and journalism.
