potocari reexhumationOn the 25th of July, n the Memorial Centre in Potocari, will start the re-exhumation of the remains of 65 victims for the sake of re-association, or the completion of the body.

A spokeswoman for the Missing Persons Institute of BiH, Lejla Cengic, recalled that the remains of victims of the genocide that happened in July 1995 in Srebrenica were found in a number of primary, secondary, and in some cases even tertiary mass graves.

“Relocation of mass graves in order to cover up the crime and destroy the traces resulted in a finding of incomplete bodies in mass graves. During the process of identification, families are familiar with the fact that there is a possibility of subsequent finding parts and identification of the remains of their members in cases of incomplete remains,” explained Cengic.

She emphasized that, if they find and identify the remains subsequently, the family are informed and called for identification. With their consent, subsequently found parts of the skeleton are added to already buried remains.

Cengic reminds that re-association of 401 victim took place since 2011 and “the re-association of another 65 victims of the genocide is planned from Monday”. Re-exhumation should take place from the 25th to 29th of July, until the process of re-association of the remains of 65 victims is not complete.

“In Podrinje Identification Project (PIP) in Tuzla are the remains of 1,000 victims, where they subsequently obtained DNA and in the upcoming years will be done re-exhumation in Potocari in order to add subsequently found parts of the skeleton,” said Cengic.
